About

Hello, and welcome to Author’s Canvas!  My name is Emily Raper and I created this blog as a project to practice various types of writing, publishing, and marketing and to improve my writing through my blog and through the advice from the blogs of others.

A Little About Me:

I am currently and undergraduate student pursuing a bachelor’s degree Technical Writing and Communication with an emphasis in IT and Design and a minor in computer science.  Alongside my future career as a web developer, I would like to write for style guides, startups, or websites and businesses.  Some of my hobbies and goals would be to eventually publish works of my own, and to pursue my passion for emergency medicine and helping people by volunteering as an EMT.

I have done several types of writing, and have always had a passion for it.  Creative writing initially appealed to me as a high school student when school required me to write and read short stories.  When entering college, I made an effort to expand my writing abilities by writing for our school and local newspaper.  Through this experience, I was able to learn the skills of interviewing and get a small background in journalism.  As a social person and an extrovert, I also enjoyed the challenge of direct communication and interviewing that news reporting demands.  The new outlook on the new culture I had been submerged in also enhanced my abilities is writing with a biased tone, and this is really what sparked my interest as a technical writer.  As far as the my interest in legal studies, law and criminal justice has always been a personal hobby and passion of mine.  This may or may not show up in my Netflix habits….(yes I have binged CSI, Psych, Criminal Minds, Castle, Sherlock, Law and Order, etc.).  Detective writers such as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie have always been inspirations of mine, and fictional detectives like Sherlock Holmes and Poirot constantly baffle and encourage me to expand my horizons in my own creative writing.

My goal with this blog is begin start a platform for my own writing, and to share and gain writing skills from others.

  1. Hi Emily. Just checking things out and getting familiar with the site and all it has to offer. I really resonated with the last sentence of your ‘About’ section; although, the whole anecdote was intresting to read. Just wanted to wish you thr best of luck!

      1. Oh funny, I guess I assumed that’s how you somehow found my blog. I worked at LCA when it was MCCS. I worked in the Media Center and also helped with lunch/recess. I left there in 2010 – you were probably in like 3rd or 4th grade, so it’s no wonder you don’t remember me haha!

      3. Yeah, my blog name doesn’t really let on who I actually am does it? Haha!
I wouldn’t have known who you were either by your blog’s name. Yes, it is a small world. I look forward to reading your posts. 🙂
